Today i visited DLF Emporio and gather some feedback from various luxury brands there- the general response is that the brands are not very concerned about profits ,rather they want to promote or showcase their name in India. though there is some contrast in the margins and expenses with respect to costing and profit margins, one point to be considered here is -all of them want to be connected to the mass here for long them even though it is only a meager fraction of the general population that they are managing now.So my earlier doubt of why foreign luxury brands are closing their shop is not they want to, but their partners in India are not receptive to their idea of loss making.Hence, these brands in spite of single store concept or two store concept are running their business here in India.

In reply to <a href="https://www.thirdeyesight.in/2012-will-india-sizzle-or-fizzle-for-international-fashion-brands/#comment-239">gunadhor</a>.

The consumption base for luxury brands is still relatively small in India. Luxury brands need to take a long view on the market. If there is an Indian partner involved, their perspective also needs to be similarly long-term - certainly two margins (the brand's own and the Indian partner's) rather than one create additional stresses. When there is a mismatch in expectations (how quickly to scale, how quickly the business could become profitable, what sort of investments are needed to build the brand presence and who should invest in it) relationships can break down causing the business itself to falter.

So then coming back to luxury bands such as of Todds,Fendi,Gucci,Ferragamo etc, despite still coughing up large share of their margin on import and logistics managed to stand themselves, whereas other brands who come through JV or master distributor routes falter, Why such imbalance when the market itself isn't showing likewise? Is it because the third party (agents/distributors) are eating up the major share hence no profit for the company ( see what happened to Blues clothing and even DLF).
